lielac: Richard looking grumpy and saying "This is the plane of suck." (suck)

 Dear fanauthor,

I love your story. It is glorious. I love the AU, I love your interpretation of the characters, I love the prose.

But. BUT.

Your chapters are too goddamn long [for me]. Six chapters containing a story currently clocking in at a little over 90,000 words equals more than 15,000 words a chapter. This is OK for the (very) occasional gigantic oneshot, but coddamn does it get tiring working my way through[ ]15k word chapters without being able to mark my place like I could if this was a meatspace hunk of reading material.

Chapters are your friends. They create a good stopping point. If there are too few of them, [some] readers will get bored and wander off. Okay, it's not like you're exactly in danger of running out of readers, but. But you could totally have more[, especially since anyone who does like really long chapters can hit AO3's 'entire work' button and not have to deal with the pesky 'next chapter' button at all]. Just... chapters. Shorten them. Please?

EDIT: And, in the truest tradition of dashing off rants in a minute or two, I made a couple sweeping generalizations and forgot aspace. Edits enclosed inside [STRONG square brackets].

Ha, I am the exact opposite. The more chapters a fic has the less likely I am to read or finish it. I just get frustrated having to stop and load the next chapter - a combination of my speedy reading and my ADD at work.

The 'entire work' button is my favorite feature. :)

Long chapters are one of the reasons I have a document just for bookmarks, when reading on my computer. I'll write down fic-title, chapter, and c/p whatever sentence I've reached into the doc, and then do a search for it when I want to continue reading.

I started out trying to remember the sentence, but then I'd get it all mangled in my mind. Then it was small scraps of paper or whatever I had lying around, but that quickly became very difficult to keep track of... Then organisation! I use it for fic, ebooks, audio books, drama-- well everything, now (I don't always have scores of time.)

*g* Doesn't bother me at all, even if it's 90,000 words per chapter. Somehow I never seem to have trouble finding the place I stopped.

XD This. The longer the better. I remember when one fic I was reading years ago uploaded a chapter that was literally 45,000 words long and I was totally, utterly delighted.

Yes, just that. One of the WsIP I follow was updated with a 49,000 words chapter and I was over the moon with joy.

I'm the opposite. I tend to read works all in one sitting, so I frequently find stories with shorter chapters harder to get into due to the constant, natural stopping points at the end of chapters. I also only like long fics, so if I could find something that suited my taste and had 15,000 word chapters, I'd be ecstatic.

Whenever I do chaptered fic, anything less than 10k just doesn't feel right to me! Maybe it comes from the days of where stories had 63 chapters of about 300 words each...

I'm with you on this one. I like long chapters, but once I hit five thousand words or so, I either need to take a break or I skim the rest, because I just can't read it.
