YKINMK but sometimes you need to warn/what was the point?

So this is my first post here. I've been sitting on the Rue one for a while, but the other one is fairly new.


--Dear AO3 author: write all the noncon you want. I really don't care, cause your kink is not my kink but your kink is okay etc, but sometimes your kink can be triggering to people and you need to put up a warning for frak's sake. I mean that. If your fic is about Alan raping Bob, then the only warning on it should not be "underage", good god. And you shouldn't call it "dub-con" in the notes (and still not warn for it? What?) when you have Bob very clearly saying stuff like "Alan, no" and "my dad's going to be here soon" and "stop".

--Dear FF.net author: ...what were you trying to do there? I honestly don't know. Listen, Rue and Katniss have similarities in the way they relate to their younger siblings, but other than that, they are very different people. Rue's "voice" is not going to sound the exact same as Katniss's. Really. So...copy/pasting the first chapter of the book, word-for-word, and substituting everything Katniss/District 12 for Rue/District 11 stuff...why? Are you trolling or something? Was it like a social experiment to see what people would do when they realized? *scratches head*

Ugh to that first one. I hate people calling flat-out rape "dub-con", and given that even situations that can (dubiously, imo) be called dub-con still need a warning in the first place.

To the second, I'm not a Hunger Games fan, but I feel the same way about that sort of thing that I do when people write movie "fusions" that are really just characters from canon x swapped into canon y with all the same dialogue, etc. left intact. That's not writing fic. It's using the find/replace tool.

I have such a love/hate relationship with fusions because when they're done well they're so much fun but I get tired of wading into one for long enough to realize all of the dialogue/characterizations are just pasted onto different characters, which is really a failure to actually "fuse" the two universes and is just recasting the other characters with ones you think are more pretty or something. And doing something like that with characters in the same canon when people are obviously going to notice how much is copied just seems like a colossal waste of time.

This is exactly why I keep reading fusions and keep ending up disappointed. They have sooo much potential to be fun and interesting and to give new insight into an old, favourite plot, and then... Gah. But now this is becoming a derail.

Re: the first rant: Yeah, consent doesn't get much more non than that. The amount of people who can't tell the difference between sex and rape is truly horrifying. I mean, the difference between dubcon and noncon can sometimes be debatable, but everyone had better be able to tell those apart from consensual sex. Yet, everyone clearly isn't. Or they just don't care. I don't know which explanation is worse. At any rate, not warning for something triggering that you (general you) KNOW is there is so uncool.
