I know that some people find it cute when non-native English speakers mess up, and that’s fine, but I wish it was acknowleffed more that this is fanon. I can’t think of a single time in canon when he’s shown speaking anything other than perfect English. He can apparently even do a convincing American accent. So weird when people suddenly start talking about him making mistakes or not understanding something someone said in English.

Sounds like fandom's tendency to use reductive characterization strikes again. Take one tiny feature or thing they did once, and make their entire characterization revolve around that. It's always annoying.

One thing I'll say in defense of the occasional not-knowing-a-word: people for whom something is not their native language (but are fluent in it) are capable of sounding 100% native until they encounter a word they don't know that any native speaker would probably know.

I had a Mongolian friend/classmate that I did not realize was not a native English speaker in my Spanish class, until she asked me what 'splash' meant and explained English was actually her third language. Talk about shame. I'm good at Spanish but anyone would almost immediately know I wasn't a native Spanish speaker.
